About PGN
PGN stands for Portable Game Notation. It is the standard plain-text format for recording a chess game, and it is supported by essentially every chess program and website. A PGN holds optional header tags in square brackets followed by the moves themselves.
Standard headers
- Event, Site, Date, Round
- Where and when the game was played. These are the first four tags of the standard Seven Tag Roster.
- White and Black
- The names of the two players.
- Result
- 1-0 for a White win, 0-1 for a Black win, 1/2-1/2 for a draw, or * when the game has no result.
- SetUp and FEN
- Used together to mark a game that began from a non-standard position. The FEN tag holds that starting position.
A minimal game
Headers are optional; the movetext and result are what make the game replayable.
[Event "Example Game"] [White "White"] [Black "Black"] [Result "1-0"] 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. c3 Nf6 5. d3 d6 1-0
Move notation
Moves use standard algebraic notation. Castling is O-O or O-O-O, captures use x, checks use +, and checkmate uses #. Promotion is written as the destination square followed by the piece, for example e8=Q. The same notation is used on the analysis board.
Reviewing your own games
Stepping through your own games is one of the fastest ways to improve. Import a game here, then open it on the analysis board: every move is graded against the engine so you can see exactly where the game turned, and your imported games are kept in the Library on this device.
