Chess analysis board

About the analysis board

The analysis board tells you how a position stands and which moves are best. Make moves on the board, paste a FEN or a PGN, or open one of your games. The engine runs on your own device, so the positions you analyze are not sent anywhere.

Reading the analysis

Evaluation
How far ahead one side is, in pawns. +1.2 means White is better by a little over a pawn; a negative number favours Black. M3 means a forced mate in three.
Lines
The best moves the engine found, strongest first. Show one, two or three lines to compare the alternatives.
Depth
How many moves ahead the engine has looked. Deeper searches are more reliable and take longer.
Principal variation
The sequence of best moves for both sides that the evaluation is based on.

Explore your own ideas

Moves you make on the board branch off as your own line, so you can try a plan, see how the engine answers it, and go back to the game.
